When Keith Boardman started his “Mail for Our Military” mailbox forwarding campaign in 1975, he knew he was doing something special for our troops overseas. Being away from their family for such extended periods of time is always a strain on our troops, but it becomes increasingly more difficult around the holidays. This is where Boardman’s campaign kicks in. Using good old-fashioned snail-mail, Boardman sends our military overseas letters and packages from people from all over the country.
One of the biggest contributors to Boardman’s mailbox forwarding campaign is the Pensacola Christian Academy in Florida. According to Principal Ryan Bucy, who attended the academy from kindergarten through his senior year of high school, the “Mail for Our Military” holiday mailbox forwarding campaign has been around as long as he can remember. The school’s Young Patriotic Americans Club teaches its students about their civic duties and how important programs like “Mail for Our Military.” This year, 38 of its students wrote 573 letters for our armed forces overseas.
This holiday mailbox forwarding service doesn’t go unnoticed from our military. Over the years, many military personnel have even sent back gifts to the academy. These gifts can range from small souvenirs from overseas to patches from their military uniform.
